Having jumped his first 1.20m class only 3 weeks previously, FTS Errol produced three very impressive rounds in the prestigious 5-year-old championship in Cavan to finish in second position. The first round began at a height of 1.25m and the third finished up at 1.35m, which tested the stamina, carefulness and scope of the competitors. Having jumped two super clear rounds, Nicola and FTS Errol produced a very neat jump-off round in the third, remaining unbeaten until last-to-go Clem McMahon left a stride out down the first distance to narrowly beat their time.

Also competing at Cavan were C’Mon Girl and FTS Killossery, both of which jumped extremely well. The younger horses are now on a break until the end of the year while Nicola and her team of older horses travel to some international shows in France and Spain to finish up the 2015 season.

The beautiful Cicero van Paemel stallion, “FTS Elliot”, had a super week in Lanaken at the World Breeding Championships. Ridden for the week by Neal Fearon, the six-year-old jumped double clear in both 1.30m qualifiers on Thursday and Friday to finish in overall sixth position of 270+ six-year-olds, qualifying for Sunday’s finale.

The championship track was testing- most fences measured at 1.40m, with technical distances and the open water to boot. However such was the standard of these young horses that 17 of the 40 original starters jumped clear in round one, leaving it all down to the final jump-off to decide the medals. Being on the greener side of the participants, Neal and Elliot did a lovely smooth clear round, ultimately finishing in 8th place. The eventual winner was Maikel van Mierlo and “Earley”, the 2014 five-year-old champion.

Of the 270+ six-year-old horses participating at the championships, only six (including FTS Elliot) were clear in every round during the week. An impressive achievement, and we’re looking forward to seeing more of this young superstar during the 2016 season!

"Shantonagh"- 7 year old world championship, Lanaken.

“Shantonagh”- 7 year old world championship, Lanaken.

September proved to be a successful month for all the team at Cromwellstown Stables. Nicola & “Shantonagh” took part in the World Breeding Championships in Lanaken, Belgium, where they qualified in 12th position out of 200 horses for the grand final. This was justifiably classed as a World Ranking competition, over a strong 1.45/1.50m track. Despite a strong performance Nicola and “Shantonagh” unfortunately did not make the jump off, however the experience gained paid off just the following week when the pair became the 2014 6 & 7 Year Old Hankook Champions at the Cavan Indoor Championships. “Castleforbes Tina” also finished in 7th position, unlucky to have the very last fence down in the third round, but still producing a super performance overall.

This prestigious class has been won in the past by such combinations as “Rivaal” & Conor Swail, “Pacino” & Clem McMahon, and “Mark Q” & Olive Clarke, all of whom went on to compete successfully at the very highest level all over the world, so a bright future is ahead of these two lovely 7 year olds! See Shantonagh’s winning jump off round below.

Bonheur van de Kapel, another former resident of Cromwellstown Stables, and Chrissie Swail jumped their way to 3rd place in Sunday’s Classic of the Low A/O division at WEF 2. They posted a double clear round in a time of 49.021 seconds in the jump off of the $10,000 competition. Well done to Chrissie!

Kevin Babington and Borindy (aka Lily Rose) have had a great start to their WEF 2014 campaign, finishing in runner-up position in the 8 year old class yesterday, Wednesday 15th January. Kevin acquired the ride on Borindy towards the end of last year and already looks to have formed a strong partnership with the talented mare.

Another former Cromwellstown Stables resident, Bonheur van de Kapel, is also in flying form out in Florida, partnered by Chrissie Swail and currently jumping in the Medium Amateur classes.

Wishing them continued success for the rest of the WEF circuit- watch this space for more results!

Two wins, a fourth and a fifth placing for Having a Ball at the 2013 Millstreet Horse Show last week cemented his position as one of the most consistent young horses in Ireland at the moment. Opening with a win in the 6 year-old-and-under 1.20m qualifier, the pair then took 5th (out of a huge start list of almost 140 horses) in the very competitive Boomerang 6/7 year-old qualifier, where Nicola’s former mount Bonheur also finished in 3rd place with current rider Conor Swail.

Nicola and Having a Ball then followed these results up by coming out on top once again in the 6 year-old-and-under  Championship on the penultimate day of the show, also taking 4th place in the prestigious Boomerang Championship with a lovely double clear round on the final day. You can view their round here.

One of just 9 first-round clears, Nicola and Having a Ball then produced a smooth second round to finish up in the second runner-up position.

What a great day at Gorey Agricultural Show yesterday, such a lovely show- perfect ground, a great atmosphere and everything from pony fancy dress to family jumping relays, sheep, cattle, emus, a mini-digger competition, husky sled-pulling, Little Miss Gorey…Not to mention the stands full of homemade cakes and organic food and the live entertainment!

The horses all jumped really well; clear 1.10m, placed 1.20m and 1.30m with Having a Ball, Bonheur and Lily Rose.

And in a slightly warmer part of Europe, Astilbe B jumped clear in his first 1.45m class at Vimeiro CSI3* in Portugal with Niall Talbot- check out his round below.

On February 27th 2013, I did my first sky dive as a fundraiser in aid of two charities: the Irish Cancer Society in Ireland, and JustWorld International based in Florida. The dive was a tandem one from 10,000ft, with a freefall of 45 seconds at 120 miles per hour… There are some photos below if you want to see just how green someone can go!

Many many thanks to everyone for their extreme generosity, which helped me to raise
approximately €2500/$3200 for the two charities.

Bonheur van de Kapel, a 2007 Belgian-bred gelding by Obus Delcour Wisbecq out of a mare by Gladstone, is the newest mount for Nicola this 2013 season. He has beautiful balance and a careful scopey jump- one to keep an eye on this year!

The lovely Argentinean-bred mare HJ Santa and Nicola came out on top in the Pennfields $2000 1.30m during the Winter Equestrian Festival recently. Going into the lead early with a time of 60.543 seconds, this proved unbeatable and the pair finished up just under two seconds ahead of second-placed Shawn Casady. Check out the video below!

The final show of 2012 was a great end to the season. Seven-year-old Astilbe B was in great form with stable-mate Knockatee Lad, ridden by Zoe McElligott, on fire in the Internationals placing in both Saturday and Sunday’s speed classes.

Penny Lane, produced by Nicola since 2010, has been sold to Alexa Pessoa. The World Cup show in Lyon this weekend was their first show together, and they successfully jumped clear in the 1.35m and 1.40m classes in the 2* division. We wish Alexa all the best with Penny, and much success in the future!

Autumn brings improvements to Cromwellstown Stables- at long last the facilities are bring upgraded to include a brand-new purpose-built 60m x 30m jumping arena. The surface was sourced after extensive research by Nicola, and looks set to be foot-perfect.  Watch this space for updates on progress!
